Portland International
Raceway Mission Statement
Our goal is to provide a "World Class
Racetrack" that facilitates a wide spectrum of users. From CART Races and Formula USA
Pro Motorcycle, to sport car club regional and nationals, drag racing, motocross racing,
bicycle racing, go kart racing, motorcycle road racing, driving schools, car shows and
swap meets.
PIR provides a safe place for groups, clubs and organizations to conduct racing and
non-racing vehicle-oriented events. The raceway draws more than 20,000 participants in
raceway driver training sessions, recreational activities, and competitive events.
Annually, the raceway attracts approximately 400,000 spectators to 135 events and is in
use nearly every day of the year.
In keeping with the goal of providing an alternative recreational resource, PIR has
events that range from bicycle races to one of only nineteen CART races held in the
world. From commercial photography shoots to professional driver training, roller blading
to motocross races, swap meets to car shows, go kart races to Holiday light shows, PIR has
over four hundred event days each year. 95% of these days are used by hobbyists and other
non-profit groups and individuals. PIR events will be attended by over 20,000 competitors
and 400,000 spectators. The Racetrack is an active bidder for television commercial usage,
commercial photography, and is used by auto manufactures for new car demonstrations and
testing. Every year track events bring between 30 and 35 million dollars into the Portland
business community. Because of the popularity of PIR, there are between 35 and 40 race-related businesses in the Portland area that derive a portion or all of their revenues
because of events at the raceway. The event organizers at PIR also donate over $100,000
per year to local charities.
Revenues generated by spectator events subsidize the smaller
events. The major spectator
events include: The Rose Festival Cup Race, the Freightliner / G.I. Joe's 200
(CART Cars),
the Formula USA Pro Motorcycle Race, the Zupan's Markets Historic Races, and the
Rose City Gran Prix (American Le Mans).
PIR has a professional driving school on site
- Pro
Drive. They provide
Driver Safety and Advance Driver Safety classes using their skid cars. For more information call
Pro Drive at (503) 285-4449, or visit their web
